Yamaha unveils the new X-City at the EICMA

The new X-City presents an elegant and stylish look. © Yamaha. The Japanese manufacturer unveiled the new big-wheel X-City, a scooter that offers class-leading levels of access, manoeuvrability, comfort and functionality for customers looking for the latest generation urban commuter.

The stylish new X-City has been developed using Yamaha's huge knowledge and experience in the design of Maxi Scooters, and features sleek and sporty new bodywork. The front of the cowl and the headlamp area breathes a distinctive Yamaha style, while the beautifully flowing lines running from the front fender through to the tapered tail emphasises the X-City's elegance and sophistication.

Easy access and high levels of comfort

Yamaha's designers have gone to great lengths to ensure that the X-City offers class-leading comfort and functionality, and one of the first things that the rider will appreciate is the ease of access.

Particular attention has been paid to the angle, height and width of the footboard area, as well as to the shape of the seat and also the distance between the front of the seat and the front cowl, and the X-City's ergonomic design allows for quick and easy access for riders of varying sizes.

In addition, the relatively low height of the footboards compared with similar models allows riders to place their feet on the ground in slow or stationary traffic with ease, making the X-City one of the most attractive solutions for urban riding and suburban commuting.

Once seated, the new X-City rider is also sure to notice the high levels of comfort experienced on this new big-wheel Maxi Scooter. The handlebar/footboard/seat relationship has been designed to offer riders of varying sizes a comfortable and relaxed riding position, and the screen and leg shields ensure excellent wind and weather protection for stress-free commuting.

Passenger comfort is first class, and the luxuriously padded stepped dual seat and grab bar – combined with the aluminium passenger footrests – make the X-City ideal for two.

Useful storage space

Yamaha's designers have paid special attention to the provision of useful storage space, and the X-City is equipped with a good-sized underseat storage compartment that has been specially designed to accommodate a laptop or helmet. There is also a handy glove compartment, and a carry hook is also provided for carrying smaller bags.

Big wheels with wide tyres

One of the most significant features on the new X-City is the wheel size, and this sophisticated new model is equipped with a 16-inch front wheel and a 15-inch rear wheel – the first time this ‘big-wheel' combination has been used on a Yamaha Maxi Scooter.

These large diameter, lightweight aluminium 6-spoke wheels are fitted with wide-section tyres, with a 120/70-16 at the front, and a 140/70-15 at the rear, and this combination of large front and rear wheels and wide tyres delivers very good handling performance over a variety of road surfaces.

In addition to their primary function of gripping the road surface, the X-City's wide tyres also perform a shock-absorbing function that enhances rider comfort – particularly on the cobblestone street surfaces found in many European cities.

The 120-section front tyre is also the widest to be used in the 250 big wheel category, and as well as improving handling, traction and comfort, the use of such a wide front tyre enhances the overall aesthetics and appeal of this new Yamaha Maxi Scooter.

Generous front and rear suspension

Yamaha's Maxi Scooters are justifiably famous for their effective suspension performance, and the X-City is no exception. The lightweight telescopic front forks give 100 mm of easy suspension action, while the silver-coloured rear shock absorber offers 105 mm of rear wheel travel.

Both the front and rear suspension systems are designed to give a smooth ride in the city and on the highway, and together with its well-padded dual seat and wide section tyres, the X-City offers one of the most comfortable rides on two wheels.

Easy manoeuvrability in the city

The first thing that riders will notice is how easy the new X-City is to get on and off. The next thing that will become evident is just how comfortable and easy this 250 cc Maxi Scooter is to ride. And when riding in the city, this stylish new Maxi Scooter's exceptional manoeuvrability and lightweight handling has to be experienced to be believed.

The special combination of a well-balanced engine and chassis, ergonomic riding position, lightweight wheels and a compact 1470 mm wheelbase ensure easy directional changes, making the X-City the absolute master in congested traffic conditions.

And with its low footboards – which are designed to allow the rider to get their feet on the ground quickly and easily in slow or stationary traffic – X-City riders are sure to feel in control.

Powerful disc brakes

The X-City offers one of the most advanced technical packages in the Maxi Scooter category, and the braking system is another example of how this new model benefits from class-leading equipment.

Featuring a 270 mm diameter front disc and a 240 mm rear disc, the X-City's braking system delivers plenty of strong and progressive stopping power for high levels of rider control in busy city or highway conditions.

Comprehensive instrumentation

Housed in an attractive chrome panel, the X-City's stylish and compact digital/analogue instrumentation is illuminated with blue light, and offers the rider full information at a glance. Alongside the speedometer are a fuel level reserve indicator, clock and water temperature lamp, as well as flasher and high beam lamps.

Liquid-cooled 249 cc 4-stroke engine

The new X-City is driven by a quiet and clean-running 249 cc 4-stroke liquid-cooled engine – fully compliant with EU3 emissions regulations. The compact engine has been developed in harmony with the chassis, and has resulted in a well-balanced package. As outlined in the chassis section, the new X-City delivers excellent all-round handling performance and high levels of agility, with particular emphasis on easy manoeuvrability in crowded urban conditions.

Strong torque at lower rpm

Maximum power of 15.6 kW is developed at 7500 rpm, while maximum torque of 21.5 Nm is developed at just 5800 rpm for responsive acceleration away from the traffic lights, and good overtaking performance. This new 249 cc 4-stroke engine has been specially developed to deliver strong performance ideally suited to urban conditions, and that is why the X-City has been tuned to deliver its maximum torque at a lower rpm than any other Yamaha Maxi Scooter.

An advanced electronic fuel injection system delivers a precisely metered supply of fuel to the clean-running 249 cc 4-stroke engine, and this ensures excellent throttle response combined with good fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Low-maintenance automatic transmission

The responsive engine drives through a fully-automatic V-belt transmission which gives smooth, stepless acceleration from a standstill right through to the maximum speed – and with maximum torque delivered at only 5800 rpm, the X-City accelerates well in the mid-rpm range for a relaxing, stress-free commuting experience.

And, like all Yamaha scooters, the fully-automatic transmission is a quiet, clean and low-maintenance system that's ideal for commuters who want an easy to own scooter that does its job with minimum fuss.
