Ruben Xaus sets the fastest time in today's second day of WSBK official test

Spaniard Ruben Xaus (Ducati Sterilgarda) has already won an SBK this season and he forced his name to the top of another results sheet at Vallelunga, after scoring the fastest time in the official tests. His best lap of 1'36.382 was set in the first session of the second day, when conditions were at their best. Xaus' controlled aggression saw off challenges from day one top-man, Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) who set his overall second best time in the same session as Xaus.

Bayliss set one of the highest hauls of laps over two days (146) with a best single lap time of 1'36.556. His namesake and countryman Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia) scorched third fastest lap time, with a 1'36.731, again set in the 'magic' early session on day two. The only 'top' rider to set his best-of-test time in the final session, held in hot temperatures in the afternoon, was championship leader James Toseland (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda). He was also the only other rider to break the 1'37 barrier, with a 1'36.783, one of 140 laps.

BIAGGI FIFTH AFTER TWO DAYS Max Biaggi (Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra) reasserted himself as the top Suzuki rider on show, in fifth, after his team-mate Yukio Kagayama (Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra) slipped to an overall ninth on the final day. A cosmopolitan spread of machines filled the top six places as a semi-factory Ducati, a full-factory Ducati, a factory Yamaha, factory Honda and factory Suzuki were followed by a factory Kawasaki - the PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse machine of serial SBK race winner, Regis Laconi. After an impressive first day Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) marginally improved his time but not his overall ranking, scoring a 1'37.506 to go seventh fastest. Roby Rolfo (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) was eighth fastest on lap times but left with the highest number of laps over the four available sessions, a stunning 168. Kagayama, in ninth, missed out on eighth place by only 0.008 seconds.

FABRIZIO INTO THE TOP TEN AT HOME One week before a call up to a MotoGP ride in Germany, Michel Fabrizio left his home track tenth in Superbike - like Toseland setting his best lap (1'37..817) in the last session on offer. Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati Xerox) opted to miss the final session, having completed his tasks, and after the cumulative effects of a cycle crash the week before the test, and then a small off on day one at Vallelunga.

© FGsport. Shinichi Nakatomi (Team Yamaha YZF) was 12th, one place up on Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse). The last of the privateers proved to be Alessandro Polita (Celani Suzuki Team Italia), Vittorio Iannuzzo (Kawasaki PSG-1 Corse), Luca Morelli (DFX Corse Honda) and Dean Ellison (Team Pedercini).
